1948 Mexico Cinco Pesos 90% Silver Coin
From south of the border, a most unique Mexican 90% sovereign silver coin backed by the Mexican government.
These are the coins that have/are used to make authentic badges for the Texas Rangers (see photos).
Contains
.8681 oz actual silver weight, as 30 grams of .900 fine (whereas an
American Silver Peace Dollar, for example, contains .7734 oz of silver).
This is a 40 mm diameter coin, roughly the size of an American Silver Eagle.
This is the coin used to produce the official badges for the Texas Rangers (see photo).
The obverse features Cuauhtemoc, the courageous last emperor of the Aztec empire who was captured and eventually executed by the Spanish conquistador, Hernan Cortez.
The reverse shows the Mexican coat of arms, based on the Aztec symbol for Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City), the center of the Aztec empire. It recalls the legend of an eagle sitting on a cactus while devouring a serpent that signaled to the Aztecs where to found their city, Tenochtitlan.

La Casa de Moneda de México is the oldest mint to open on
the American continents. Established by viceroy Antonio de Mendoza of Spain
in 1535, the mint was mandated by King Charles I, who was eager to open the
first New World mint.
For the next 400 years, silver eight-reales and pesos
circulated widely across the Americas
and into Asia. In 1947, the Mexican government unveiled
a silver five peso coin called the Cuauhtémoc, which celebrated the famous
Mexican leader. Today, all Mexican coins are produced in San
Luis Potosí, though the mint is headquartered at the
Museo Nacional de las Culturas in Mexico City.
